Rev. Dr. Sarah Reyes, Pastor
Sarah Reyes graduated from the University of San Francisco with a BS in Organizational Behavior, received a Master of Arts Degree in Education, and a Masters in Divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary. Sarah will receive in Doctorate in Ministry in Parish Revitalization in May 2009 from McCormick Theological Seminary.
Sarah and her husband live in San Leandro and have four children. They are Lolo and Lola (Filipino for grandpa and grandma) to their give granddaughters. Sarah's interests include: watercolors, camping, Hawaii, babies, family gatherings, and chocolate - in no particular order.
God nudged her into the Ministry of Word and Sacrament through her son, Bruce Reyes-Chow who was ordained four years before her. Probably one of the very few times where a mother follows her son into ministry..."perhaps it was one too many gang fights or conflicts with one department in the high school about understanidng the needs of certain students but I was wrestling with the question, 'what does God want me to do?' and the answer came after observing my son serving in his first call and thinking, maybe seminary? and the rest is history! God does have a sense of humor!"
Sarah brings to the parish her experience of 20 years in the California Legislature, eight years as a high school teacher and project coordinator of a Drug Free School Zone Program. "I have learned how to say no to people and have them walk away feeling that I said 'yes.' frisked for weapons, and broke up gang fights...I think God has prepared me well for the church!" From Pastor Sarah:
I have had the wonderful opportunity and challenge of serving the Faith Community of Bethel since 1999. In the past ten years, we have accompanied each other on the journey of transformation knowing that God has plans for us. We are an inclusive and open community that respects each person's faith journey. We trust God! Our worship celebrations invite all generations to participate. We are rich in music under the leadership of Andrew Jamieson. We are blessed with a faith community that is authentic about their faith, sharing their faith with doubts, joys, tears and laughter. We know that God loves us no matter what!
