Minister of Music Job Description - January 2014
The expectations of the person who will fill the Minister of Music position with Bethel Community PCUSA not in a particular order:
Able to work with different opinions about life, culture, and music while at the same time able to stand firm in one’s convictions without causing conflict and instead building relationships with the other.
Work with the community outside the walls of Bethel by coordinating two musical fundraising events that involve other faith communities in San Leandro. All the proceeds of these events go to April Showers – A program for people who are homeless and George Mark House in San Leandro – A Palliative Care facility for children.
Able to help provide an environment that will support, affirm and nurture all who sing or play an instrument in the congregation.
Experience in different styles of music including other cultures, languages, or generations.
Committed to a work ethic that is reliable and flexible.
Understands the music can be the message for faith, justice, compassion, conflict, peace .
Able to work collaboratively with the pastor in visioning and planning the future of Bethel’s music ministry and help create new ways to worship with music or arts or drama or…trusting that the Spirit will work with all one does
Enjoys working with children, off-tune singers, non-reading music people, and grumpy people—All who make up the church.
References that will affirm one’s gifts of music and work in the church.
Able to pray for and with the faith community one serves.
What a Minister of Music can expect from Bethel Community PCUSA not in any particular order:
A part-time position (approximately 20 hours).
Salary commensurate with skills, experience and creativity in supporting a congregation through music. Presbyterian pay scales for musicians will be used. Payday at the end of the month.
2 week vacation and 1 day a month of earned sick leave.
A fun community of faith that understands that God has a sense of humor.
Committed individuals who love music who will show up for rehearsals.
Compassion and empathy when life gets in the way of work.
A community that is open to trying new things.
A pastor who will support new things.
Opportunities to use one’s gifts in music in different ways i.e. musicals, cantatas or drama.
Prayer and support from the whole faith community for the person who fills this position.
Now the Details:
What does Bethel’s current music program include?
A Choir that practices on Thursday nights from 7:30-9 and on Sunday mornings, if they are performing on that particular Sunday.
A Praise Team that practices on Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30 and on Sunday mornings, if they are performing on that particular Sunday.
A smaller group “the band” practices on Wednesday nights from 7:30-8:30 sometimes includes piano, a vocalist, bass, and guitar.
All the above add up to about all total ten people with the potential of new folks.
Some just do one of the genres, others do all three. It just depends on the schedule and the moon placement!
Several people in the faith community of Bethel play instruments including drums, guitar, cellos, tuba, flutes, banjo, violin and if asked will play if given enough notice.
Scheduling practices and performances of the Choir, Praise Team, and Band are up to the Minister of Music and Pastor.
How does the music get chosen?
Pastor and Minister of Music work together to select appropriate music for worship.
The Minister of Music helps selects music for special seasons, Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter
Members of the music teams bring suggestions
What music programs would Bethel like to see happen regularly?
A children’s choir. Currently, children will meet after church for about 20 minutes to go over a few simple songs for a special event. i.e. Christmas Sunday. Children currently are part of a rotation of Worship leaders .
Bethel is open to any music programs that embrace, nurture, and teach children about music.
What are other responsibilities are there for of the Minister of Music?
Memorial Services for Members.
Coordinating Musical Venues (June – April Showers-Program for people who are homeless) (December – George Mark Children’s House – A Palliative care center for children) If the music is the responsibility of the Minister of Music. Our December 2013 was coordinated by the faith community of Bethel – A Christmas Sing Along .
